Can You Drink on Vyvanse? The Short Answer and the Long One

You can drink on Vyvanse in the mechanical sense, because a prescribed lisdexamfetamine capsule does not stop ethanol from entering the blood. The long answer is the record I would actually keep. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's April 2026 VYVANSE label does not clear alcohol. CNS stimulants raise blood pressure by about 2 to 4 mm Hg and heart rate by about 3 to 6 beats per minute on average. Dextroamphetamine's elimination half-life in healthy adults is 10 to 11.3 hours. That same stimulant can hide how drunk you are while a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 grams per deciliter still counts as an illegal per se driving offense in 49 states.

I spent six years administering a Toronto hospital chaplaincy office. If a patient asked for a named chaplain at 21:00, I wrote the name and 21:00. Substituting "evening spiritual care" was a recording error. People who type "can you drink on vyvanse" want a waiting period. The form that matters lists milligrams, hours since the last capsule, standard drinks, and the next handoff: the prescriber who wrote the dose. I am an administrator. I will keep the numbers from collapsing into "I felt fine."

What does the Vyvanse label actually record about alcohol?

The April 2026 DailyMed full prescribing information for VYVANSE (lisdexamfetamine dimesylate), packed by Takeda Pharmaceuticals America, does not list ethanol in Table 5 among drugs with a clinically important interaction. That silence does not authorize drinking. The Medication Guide tells patients to tell the prescriber if they have ever abused or been dependent on alcohol, because the product carries a boxed warning for abuse, misuse, and addiction. Vyvanse is a Schedule II CNS stimulant. Alcohol is a CNS depressant. Opposite arrows on a form hide each other.

Adult ADHD dosing starts at 30 mg every morning and titrates in 10 mg or 20 mg weekly steps through 30 mg to 70 mg per day, with a 70 mg maximum. For moderate to severe binge-eating disorder in adults, the target is 50 mg to 70 mg, still capped at 70 mg. A single dose must not be divided. Afternoon doses are to be avoided because of insomnia. Severe renal impairment (GFR 15 to <30 mL/min/1.73 m²) caps the dose at 50 mg; end-stage renal disease caps it at 30 mg.

The interaction table does name monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Do not take Vyvanse during MAOI treatment or within 14 days after the last MAOI dose, because of hypertensive crisis. Alcohol does not get an equivalent clock on the same page.

How long after a morning dose is dextroamphetamine still active?

Two clocks run after you swallow the capsule, and they do not agree.

The first is clinical effect. In a simulated adult workplace study, Wigal, Kollins, Childress, and Squires (Behavioral and Brain Functions, 2010) measured Permanent Product Measure of Performance scores from 2 hours through 14 hours after lisdexamfetamine. Improvement versus placebo held at every postdose time point, including the last one at 14 hours. If you took 50 mg at 7:00 a.m., 9:00 p.m. is still inside that measured window.

The second clock is plasma. DailyMed puts adult capsule Tmax for dextroamphetamine at 3.8 hours fasted, stretching to 4.7 hours after a high-fat meal. The prodrug lisdexamfetamine has a plasma elimination half-life averaging less than one hour and is generally non-quantifiable by 8 hours. The active metabolite, dextroamphetamine, has a plasma elimination half-life of 10 to 11.3 hours in healthy adults. After five half-lives, roughly 3 percent remains: 5 × 10 hours = 50 hours, and 5 × 11.3 hours = 56.5 hours. A Monday 7:00 a.m. capsule is still in that arithmetic until Wednesday. Fourteen hours is how long a workplace math test still separated drug from placebo. Fifty to 56.5 hours is how long you wait if you want most of the metabolite gone. Neither clock is an FDA-authorized interval for alcohol. Write 07:12 and 50 mg.

How do blood pressure and heart rate change if you add drinks?

Section 5.3 of the VYVANSE label uses class language for CNS stimulants: mean blood-pressure increase about 2 to 4 mm Hg, mean heart-rate increase about 3 to 6 bpm, with larger jumps in some patients. Those means describe the capsule without ethanol.

Add alcohol and the arithmetic leaves the label mean. Mendelson, Jones, Upton, and Jacob (Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1995) gave eight users intravenous methamphetamine 30 mg and oral ethanol 1 g/kg in six drinks over 30 minutes, with the injection 60 minutes after the first drink began. Compared with methamphetamine alone, the combination increased heart rate, decreased systolic blood pressure, and raised rate-pressure product, an index of cardiac work. It also diminished ethanol's subjective effects. Drugs.com's professional monograph, citing that trial, reports the heart-rate difference versus methamphetamine alone as 24 beats per minute. Methamphetamine is not lisdexamfetamine. It is the nearest controlled human study I can cite for an amphetamine plus a measured ethanol load.

A 70 kg adult at 1 g/kg would receive 70 grams of ethanol. NIAAA defines a U.S. standard drink as 14 grams (0.6 fluid ounces) of pure alcohol, so 70 grams is five standard drinks. That is binge territory for a man (five or more in about two hours) and past it for a woman (four or more), the pattern NIAAA says typically pushes blood alcohol concentration to 0.08% or 0.08 grams per deciliter.

NHTSA's 2024 Traffic Safety Facts (DOT HS 813 815) records 11,904 people killed in crashes with at least one alcohol-impaired driver, 30 percent of U.S. traffic fatalities that year. A BAC of 0.08 g/dL is the illegal per se limit in 49 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. Utah's limit is 0.05. NHTSA estimates drivers at 0.08 are about four times more likely to crash than drivers at zero.

How does stimulant-masked impairment compare with ordinary drunkenness?

Ordinary drunkenness and stimulant-masked impairment can share the same BAC and look like different nights. A waiting period is the usual ask. The more dangerous confusion is treating alertness as unimpaired judgment.

| What you can measure or feel | Alcohol without a stimulant | Vyvanse without alcohol (FDA class figures) | Alcohol plus an amphetamine-class stimulant | |---|---|---|---| | How drunk you feel | Often rises with BAC | Not an alcohol effect | Mendelson 1995: combination blunted ethanol's subjective effects | | Blood alcohol concentration | Set by grams of ethanol, time, body water | Zero from the capsule | Unchanged by how sober you feel; 0.08 g/dL is still per se in 49 states | | Mean blood pressure | Varies with dose and timing | About +2 to 4 mm Hg | Mendelson: systolic pressure fell versus methamphetamine alone while cardiac work rose | | Mean heart rate | Varies | About +3 to 6 bpm | Mendelson: heart rate rose versus methamphetamine alone; professional monograph, +24 bpm | | Crash risk at 0.08 g/dL | About 4 times versus BAC 0 (NHTSA) | Stimulant does not cancel ethanol | NHTSA risk follows measured BAC even when you feel fine |

I prefer the table to a waiting-period slogan. A person at 0.08 g/dL with lisdexamfetamine still on board can hold a conversation and still meet NHTSA's impairment profile: poorer concentration, short-term memory, speed control, and information processing. If the stimulant subtracts sleepiness at 0.05, you may never notice the step that, in Utah, is already over the legal line.

Can I have one drink on Vyvanse?

One drink is a defined quantity. NIAAA's standard drink is 14 grams of ethanol: 12 fluid ounces of regular beer at 5% alcohol by volume, 5 fluid ounces of table wine at 12%, or a 1.5-fluid-ounce shot of 40% spirits. A 12-ounce craft beer at 10% ABV is two standard drinks in one bottle. If you cannot name the grams, you do not yet have a count.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, still cited by NIAAA in 2026, tell adults who drink to stay at 1 drink or less in a day for women and 2 or less for men. Those caps were not written for a Schedule II amphetamine prodrug. I have not found an FDA-cleared statement that one standard drink is acceptable on 30 mg, and I will not invent one. If you and the prescriber still plan for a single measured drink, record the milligrams, the clock time, the NIAAA unit, and a decision not to drive.

Should I skip Vyvanse if I plan to drink?

Skipping a labeled once-daily morning dose is a change in the treatment plan. The April 2026 label says to take Vyvanse in the morning and to avoid afternoon doses because of insomnia. It does not offer a hold-for-drinking schedule. Holding the capsule so you can drink, then restarting 30 mg to 70 mg the next morning on leftover ethanol, stacks two decisions the label never paired. Residual alcohol when the next capsule lands is the clock people forget. Coffee, a shower, and a late capsule collide with the insomnia warning. If you are rearranging a Schedule II around drinking, that is a prescriber conversation.

What other stimulant dose sits on top of Vyvanse?

The FDA's consumer update on caffeine, current as of 28 August 2024, cites 400 milligrams a day for most adults as an amount not generally associated with negative effects, roughly two to three 12-fluid-ounce coffees. Caffeine is another CNS stimulant. Stacking 400 milligrams of caffeine on 70 mg of lisdexamfetamine and then adding ethanol puts three loads on heart rate and sleep. The 400 milligram figure is an adult food-safety citation, not a Vyvanse-cleared allowance.

A second documented stimulant dose sits in a mixed-amphetamine case. Jiao, Velez, Ringstad, Eyma, Miller, and Bleiberg (Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, 2009) described a 20-year-old man prescribed Adderall XR 15 mg daily who had not taken it for weeks, drank whiskey on three nights, then took two 15 mg tablets (30 mg) to stay awake for an exam. That afternoon he developed retrosternal chest pain. Troponin I was 3.5 ng/mL against that lab's myocardial-infarction cutoff of 0.5 ng/mL, with ST-segment elevation. The diagnosis was myocardial infarction likely secondary to amphetamine-induced coronary vasospasm. Adderall is mixed amphetamine salts, not lisdexamfetamine. The usable fact is the other stimulant dose: 15 mg doubled to 30 mg, on top of whiskey. Do not add a second amphetamine product to Vyvanse.

What should you record before you drink, and who gets the handoff?

  1. Write the prescribed dose in milligrams and the clock time of the last capsule (for example, 50 mg at 07:12). Include renal limits if you have them: 50 mg maximum in severe impairment, 30 mg in end-stage renal disease.
  2. Count alcohol as NIAAA standard drinks of 14 grams, not as glasses. Name the beverage, volume, and ABV when you can.
  3. Treat alertness as a failed self-test. NHTSA's 0.08 g/dL per se line, Utah's 0.05, and the 2024 count of 11,904 alcohol-impaired-driving deaths do not yield because you still feel sharp.
  4. Hand the milligrams, the hours, and the drink count to the clinician who wrote the prescription before you change the dose, skip a morning, or treat one drink as a standing exception.

Chest pain, fainting, shortness of breath, or a heartbeat that feels wrong is an emergency-department handoff. The VYVANSE label already tells patients to seek emergency care for those cardiac signs on the stimulant alone. The long answer is slower: 30 mg to 70 mg, 10 to 11.3 hours, 2 to 4 mm Hg, 3 to 6 bpm, 14 grams, 0.08 g/dL, and a stimulant that can delete the cues people use to stop.

FAQ

How long after taking Vyvanse can I drink alcohol?

The April 2026 DailyMed label does not publish a waiting period. Adult dextroamphetamine half-life is 10 to 11.3 hours, so five half-lives run about 50 to 56.5 hours. A workplace study still found efficacy 14 hours after a dose. Ask the prescriber who wrote your milligrams; clock time beats a feeling of being "off" the capsule.

Can I have one drink on Vyvanse?

NIAAA defines one U.S. drink as 14 grams of ethanol, equal to 12 ounces of 5% beer, 5 ounces of 12% wine, or 1.5 ounces of 40% spirits. The FDA label does not clear that unit on Vyvanse. If you and your prescriber still plan for one measured drink, record the milligrams, the dose time, and do not drive.

Should I skip Vyvanse if I plan to drink?

The label says to take Vyvanse in the morning and to avoid afternoon doses because of insomnia. It does not offer a hold-for-drinking schedule. Skipping a Schedule II dose, drinking, then restarting 30 mg to 70 mg on leftover alcohol is a treatment change. Ask the prescriber before you rearrange the capsule around a night out.

Does Vyvanse cancel out alcohol?

No. Lisdexamfetamine does not lower blood alcohol concentration. Mendelson and colleagues found an amphetamine-plus-ethanol combination blunted how drunk people felt while heart rate and cardiac work rose. NHTSA still treats 0.08 g/dL as impaired driving in 49 states. Alertness is a masking effect, not cancellation.

Why do I feel less drunk on Vyvanse?

Vyvanse is a CNS stimulant; alcohol is a CNS depressant. Opposite effects can hide each other. In the 1995 methamphetamine-and-ethanol trial, the combination diminished ethanol's subjective effects. You may feel less drunk at the same BAC. That missing sleepiness is a recording error in the self-test, not evidence that the drink was smaller.

Can I drink the next morning after taking Vyvanse?

A 7:00 a.m. dose can still show clinical effect at 9:00 p.m. and, by half-life arithmetic, leave metabolite in plasma the next calendar morning. "Next morning" is not a washout. Check hours since the capsule, leftover drinks, and the plan to drive. The prescriber who set your milligrams is the person who can interpret that overlap for you.
